France is the most dreamed-of wedding destination in the world, and for once the dream is entirely reasonable: châteaux by the hundreds, vineyards, cliffs above the Channel, lavender fields, medieval villages, and a certain way of celebrating that takes its time around the table. Add airports and high speed trains everywhere, and your guests can land in the morning and toast in a French garden by the afternoon.
I am Stéphane Joly, a wedding photographer specialised in documentary reportage for more than fifteen years, based in Arras in the north of France. My couples come from the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, the United States and beyond, and some have travelled 800 kilometres to work with me. My promise never changes: to be present without intruding, to capture the natural rather than direct it, and to deliver a gallery of 600 to 800 retouched photographs within 4 weeks on average. Wherever in France you celebrate, travel is calculated at its real cost and included transparently in your personalised quote, so there is never a surprise.
And let me be honest with you, because I'd rather you hear it from me. I have a good understanding of English and I'm learning to speak it better every day. My spoken English is still a work in progress, so to make sure nothing is ever lost between us I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with real-time translation. During the wedding, whenever a moment needs precise words, we communicate smoothly.

Simpler than
you think
The first thing to know concerns the ceremony. In most cases, foreigners cannot get legally married in France, because a legal civil marriage requires residency. And in practice, this changes almost nothing: nearly all international couples sign the legal papers at home, then celebrate a symbolic ceremony in France. It looks and feels exactly like a wedding ceremony, with total freedom of location, words, music and ritual, in a château garden, on a cliff or under the plane trees of a domaine. I photograph symbolic ceremonies regularly, and I promise you that the emotion is every bit as real.
The planning happens entirely by email and video call, at times that suit your time zone. We talk about your venue, your timeline and the images that matter most to you, well before the day. As soon as you book, you receive my couples' guide, then a detailed questionnaire around six months before the wedding, and we finalise everything together in a preparation meeting. By the time you land in France, we already know each other, and nothing is left to chance.
On the logistics side, everything is designed to be simple for you. For every wedding far from my base, I arrive the day before, rested, with your venue scouted in the evening light. Travel and accommodation are calculated at their real cost and integrated transparently into your quote before you commit, whether your wedding is in the Oise or on the Riviera. Your date is secured with a 30% deposit and the contract signed online, and after the wedding your gallery arrives within four weeks on average, in a private online space your family can enjoy from anywhere in the world.

- Can foreigners get legally married in France?In most cases no, and that is completely fine. France requires residency for a legal civil marriage, so almost all international couples sign the legal papers at home and celebrate a symbolic ceremony in France. And with 300+ weddings behind me, I anticipate the day visually, so communication is never a barrier to great photographs.
- How do we plan everything if we live abroad?Entirely by email and video call, at times that suit your time zone. We discuss your venue, your timeline and your priorities well before the day. You receive my couples' guide as soon as you book, then a detailed questionnaire around six months before the wedding, and we finalise your timeline together in a preparation meeting. By the time you arrive in France, everything is ready.
- How do travel costs work?Transparently, always. Travel and accommodation are calculated in advance at their real price and integrated into your quote before you commit, whether your wedding is one hour from my home or on the Riviera. For every distant wedding, I systematically arrive the day before, which also lets me scout your venue in the evening light.
- When should we book you for a destination wedding?Ideally 12 to 18 months ahead, especially for Saturdays between May and September, which go first. Destination weddings often lock their vendors early because venues and travel are planned far in advance. If your date is closer, contact me anyway: I sometimes have last minute availability.
- How many photos will we receive, and when?For a full wedding day, between 600 and 800 individually retouched images, delivered within 4 weeks on average in a secure private online gallery, accessible for one year, with high definition download and easy sharing with your loved ones anywhere in the world. For elopements, the number of images is adapted and delivery is faster.
- Can you also recommend a videographer?Yes. I regularly work in duo with Sylvain B, a wedding videographer whose cinematic eye complements my photography beautifully. Our collaboration is well practised: you share your timeline once, and we coordinate between ourselves so that neither of us ever gets in the other's frame.
- Which region should we choose?It depends on your dream and your guests. For the simplest logistics, the Oise near Paris, 25 minutes from CDG. For British couples, northern France, 35 minutes through the Eurotunnel. For the postcard, Provence and the lavender from mid June to mid July. For a wine lovers' wedding, Champagne.
