Wedding Photographer
in Switzerland

A natural, luminous documentary approach to capture the true emotion of your wedding in Switzerland. The terraced vineyards of Lavaux above the lake, the elegance of Geneva and Lausanne, the Alps on the horizon: French Switzerland is one of the most beautiful places in Europe to say yes, and couples from there have already crossed borders for my eye.

01 Why trust me with your wedding

Capturing the real,
not the posed

Getting married in Switzerland means trusting your photographer with emotions that will never happen twice. The look you exchange on a terrace above Lake Geneva, in the vineyards of Lavaux at golden hour, or in a garden with the Alps floating on the horizon. The tearful laugh of a parent on your arm. That fleeting glance during the vows. This is what I come for: the true moment, the one that cannot be staged.

I am Stéphane Joly, a wedding photographer specialised in documentary reportage for more than fifteen years, based in northern France. Switzerland holds a special place in my story: Laura and Jannik came from Lausanne to have me photograph their wedding, and their words below say better than I could why couples cross borders for a documentary eye. I am a destination photographer: for every Swiss wedding I arrive the day before, rested, with your venue scouted in the evening light, and as a native French speaker I am naturally at home in Romandie. My promise never changes: to be present without intruding, to capture the natural rather than direct it, and to deliver a gallery of 600 to 800 retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average. You can see how I work with international couples on my destination wedding page and find my collections on the investment page. Travel to Switzerland is calculated at its real cost and included transparently in your personalised quote, so there is nothing to calculate on your side.

And let me be honest with you, because I'd rather you hear it from me. I have a good understanding of English and I'm learning to speak it better every day. My spoken English is still a work in progress, so to make sure nothing is ever lost between us I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with real-time translation. During the wedding, whenever a moment needs precise words, we communicate smoothly. And French, of course, is my native language, which many couples in Romandie appreciate.

Just the two of you

Elopement

An intimate ceremony on a mountain pasture, by an alpine lake or in the vines above Lake Geneva. Switzerland is an extraordinary elopement country: cable cars carry you to ceremony spots other countries can only reach by helicopter, and the light up there is a gift.

03 My promise in Switzerland

Photographing Romandie,
between lake and mountains

French-speaking Switzerland concentrates an extraordinary wedding geography in a small territory: Lake Geneva and its riviera from Geneva to Montreux, the Lavaux vineyards climbing in Unesco-listed terraces above the water, the elegance of Lausanne and its old town, and behind everything, always, the Alps. Add one of the largest international communities in Europe, in Geneva especially, and you have a region where weddings naturally speak several languages and blend traditions, which is exactly the environment my documentary approach loves.

My approach to documentary reportage rests on a simple conviction: the most beautiful photographs happen when you forget the camera. I stay discreet and unobtrusive, blending naturally into your day without ever directing it. I arrive ahead of the preparations to catch those intimate first moments: hands adjusting a cufflink, the reflection in the mirror when you discover your dress, the quiet words between loved ones. During the ceremony, in a garden above the lake, at the civil registry or in a mountain chapel, I position myself with discretion to capture the glances, the tears of joy, the warmth of your closest people. The couple session is a moment I especially look forward to: we slip away for about twenty minutes at golden hour, into the vines or down to the water, to create natural, unposed images away from the celebration.

Switzerland also holds my favourite proof that borders mean nothing to the right couple: Laura and Jannik travelled from Lausanne to have me photograph their wedding, and their message remains one of the most precious I have received. For your Swiss wedding, the journey simply happens in the other direction: I arrive the day before, rested, with your venue scouted in the evening light, and travel is calculated at its real cost and included transparently in your personalised quote. You then receive between 600 and 800 individually retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average, in a private online gallery accessible for one year.

04 Iconic places & settings

The most beautiful settings
of French Switzerland

Five emblematic settings to anchor your wedding in the soul of Romandie.

N° 01 · Lavaux · Unesco terraces · Golden hour

The Lavaux vineyards

The terraced vineyards of Lavaux, listed as Unesco World Heritage, climb between Lausanne and Montreux in a staircase of stone walls and vines suspended above the lake. At golden hour, when the low sun sets the terraces and the water glowing at once, it is quite simply one of the most beautiful couple portrait settings in Europe. The villages of Epesses, Rivaz and Saint-Saphorin hide caveaux and terraces made for celebrations.

N° 02 · The lake · Lausanne · Montreux riviera

Lake Geneva & its riviera

Lake Geneva gives Romandie its light: vast, soft, doubled by the reflection of the Alps on the water. From the old town of Lausanne and its cathedral to the palm-lined quays of Montreux and the vineyard villages between them, the lake shore aligns ceremony gardens, historic hotels and pontoons for portraits at dusk, with Chillon castle standing guard at the water's edge.

N° 03 · International city · Jet d'eau · Old town

Geneva

Geneva is where many of my Swiss stories begin: one of the most international cities in the world, where couples from every continent settle, meet and marry. The old town, the parks along the water, the Jet d'eau on the horizon: an elegant urban backdrop, and a community that celebrates in every language at once.

N° 04 · Alpine pastures · Chapels · Cable cars

The mountains

Above the lake, the Alps offer what no other wedding country can: ceremony spots at two thousand metres reached by cable car, mountain chapels, lakes like mirrors and pastures where the only witnesses have bells around their necks. For elopements and after day sessions, the high country is pure magic, in summer flowers or autumn gold.

N° 05 · Expats · Two cultures · Civil & symbolic

The international weddings

Romandie's weddings are naturally multicultural: an expat couple marrying at the civil registry then celebrating above the lake, a Swiss and a foreigner blending two traditions in one day, families flying in from three continents. My documentary approach moves easily between languages and rituals, and my native French helps everything run smoothly with venues and officiants.

05 Frequently asked questions

Your questions about
a wedding in Switzerland

These are the questions that come up most often with couples planning their wedding in French Switzerland.

  • Do you photograph weddings in Switzerland?
Yes, with a special affection. Laura and Jannik came from Lausanne to have me photograph their wedding, and I am delighted every time the journey goes the other way. I arrive the day before, rested, and scout your venue in the evening light. Travel is calculated at its real cost and included transparently in your personalised quote, so there is nothing to calculate on your side.
  • We live in Switzerland. How does the legal side work?
Simply, for residents: your civil marriage takes place at the civil registry office, whatever your nationality, and many couples then celebrate a larger ceremony, religious or symbolic, at their venue. For non-resident couples dreaming of a Swiss wedding, the legal procedure involves more paperwork, which we verify together while planning, and a symbolic ceremony offers total freedom in the meantime. I photograph all three formats regularly.
  • Do you speak English?
Honestly: I understand English well and I'm learning to speak it better all the time, though I'm not fully fluent yet. To make sure nothing is ever lost, I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with live translation for any moment that needs precise words. And with 300+ weddings behind me, I anticipate the day visually, so communication is never a barrier to great photographs. French, of course, is my native language, which helps enormously in Romandie.
  • What are the most beautiful photo locations around Lake Geneva?
The Lavaux terraces at golden hour are the region's crown jewel. The old town of Lausanne and its cathedral esplanade overlook the whole lake. The quays of Montreux and Chillon castle glow at dusk. And for something wilder, a short cable car ride opens the alpine pastures with the lake far below. Several of these fit in a single day, which is the luxury of Romandie.
  • How many photos will we receive, and when?
For a full wedding day, you can count on 600 to 800 individually retouched images, sometimes more depending on the day, delivered within 4 weeks on average in a secure private online gallery, accessible for one year, in high definition. The rendering is soft, luminous and timeless, faithful to the atmosphere of your day. For elopements and shorter coverage, the number of images is adapted and delivery is faster.
  • When is the best season to get married in Switzerland?
June to September offers the lake at its bluest, the terraces green and the mountain routes open, with September adding the harvest atmosphere in Lavaux. May can be glorious with snow still on the peaks behind the blossom. And winter has its own card to play: a mountain elopement in the snow, with the lodges lit and the crowds gone.
  • How does the first meeting work?
I offer a first meeting that is free and without obligation, by video call, of about 20 minutes, in French or in English as you prefer. It is the moment to talk about your plans, your venue, the settings you dream of, and to see whether my approach matches what you are looking for. I then come back to you quickly with a personalised quote. Your date is confirmed on receipt of the 30% deposit and the contract signed online, with the balance settled a few weeks before the wedding.

We travelled 800 kilometres to work with Stéphane and we would do it again without hesitation. His documentary approach is exactly what we were looking for: nothing staged, nothing forced, just our day as it truly happened. The gallery tells the story of our wedding with a sincerity that moves us every time we open it.
