Wedding Photographer
in Alsace
A natural, luminous documentary approach to capture the true emotion of your wedding in Alsace. Half-timbered villages, the wine route, the canals of Colmar and, in winter, the most magical Christmas atmosphere in Europe: a region that looks like a storybook, told as it truly happened.
Capturing the real,
not the posed
Getting married in Alsace means trusting your photographer with emotions that will never happen twice. The look you exchange in a cobbled lane of Riquewihr, under the half-timbered façades, in the vines above Kaysersberg, or under the lights of a Christmas market. The tearful laugh of a parent on your arm. That fleeting glance during the vows. This is what I come for: the true moment, the one that cannot be staged.
I am Stéphane Joly, a wedding photographer specialised in documentary reportage for more than fifteen years, based in Arras in northern France. I am a destination photographer: couples choose me for my eye, then I come to them, and for every Alsace wedding I arrive the day before, rested, with your venue scouted in the evening light. Alsace attracts couples from Germany, Switzerland, the United States and well beyond, drawn by a region unlike anywhere else in France, and my promise to them never changes: to be present without intruding, to capture the natural rather than direct it, and to deliver a gallery of 600 to 800 retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average. You can see how I work with international couples on my destination wedding page and find my collections on the investment page. Travel to Alsace is always included in your personalised quote, so there is nothing to calculate on your side.
And let me be honest with you, because I'd rather you hear it from me. I have a good understanding of English and I'm learning to speak it better every day. My spoken English is still a work in progress, so to make sure nothing is ever lost between us I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with real-time translation. During the wedding, whenever a moment needs precise words, we communicate smoothly.
Three moments,
one same story
Before, during, after. Three ways to tell your love story, from the vines to the winstubs.
Wedding reportage
The heart of my work. Full coverage from the preparations to the party. Ceremonies in the vines or in a village church, couple portraits in the cobbled lanes at golden hour, dinner in a domaine or a converted farmhouse, and the warmth of an Alsatian celebration told with honesty.

Elopement & winter weddings
My favourite Alsatian secret: an intimate ceremony in December, when the villages light up for the Christmas markets and the façades disappear under the garlands. Snow on the vines, mulled wine in your hands, and a setting no summer can match. Alsace is the winter elopement destination of Europe.

Engagement & After Day
A relaxed couple session in the days before or after your wedding, in your dress and suit or simply as yourselves. The Petite Venise of Colmar at first light, the vines above Eguisheim in the evening, a village square before the visitors arrive: Alsace was made for these stolen moments.

Photographing Alsace,
in every season
Alsace is the most distinctive wedding region of France: half-timbered villages in every colour, the wine route winding through the vines from Marlenheim to Thann, the canals of Colmar, the great cathedral of Strasbourg, and in the background the blue line of the Vosges. It borders Germany and Switzerland, which makes it naturally international: many of my couples here celebrate between two cultures and three languages, and my documentary approach moves easily between traditions.
My approach to documentary reportage rests on a simple conviction: the most beautiful photographs happen when you forget the camera. I stay discreet and unobtrusive, blending naturally into your day without ever directing it. I arrive ahead of the preparations to catch those intimate first moments: hands adjusting a cufflink, the reflection in the mirror when you discover your dress, the quiet words between loved ones. During the ceremony, in the vines, in a village church or under the beams of a domaine, I position myself with discretion to capture the glances, the tears of joy, the warmth of your closest people. The couple session is a moment I especially look forward to: we slip away for about twenty minutes at golden hour, into the vines or the cobbled lanes, to create natural, unposed images away from the celebration.
And then there is winter, the season that makes Alsace unique in Europe. From late November to the end of December, the villages become what the rest of the world imagines when it dreams of Christmas: illuminated façades, wooden chalets, the scent of mulled wine, and sometimes snow on the vines. A winter wedding or elopement here asks a photographer to master short days and low light, and I plan your timeline around that precious light, with the blue hour and the illuminations as your finale. Whatever the season, I arrive the day before, and travel is always included in your personalised quote. You then receive between 600 and 800 individually retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average, in a private online gallery accessible for one year.
The most beautiful settings
of Alsace
Five emblematic settings to anchor your wedding in the soul of Alsace.
Colmar
Colmar is the postcard of Alsace made real: the canals of the Petite Venise, the flower-covered bridges, the crooked half-timbered houses in ochre, pink and green. At first light, before the streets fill, the old town belongs to you alone, and every corner offers a backdrop for portraits full of colour and warmth. In December, Colmar becomes one of the most beautiful Christmas towns in the world.
The wine route villages
The Alsace wine route strings together some of the most beautiful villages in France: Riquewihr inside its ramparts, Eguisheim and its concentric lanes, Kaysersberg beneath its castle. Around them, the vines climb the hillsides and turn gold in autumn. Weddings here happen in wine domaines, converted farmhouses and village halls, with the couple session in the rows of vines at golden hour as the emotional summit of the day.
Strasbourg
Strasbourg brings the urban elegance: the sandstone cathedral glowing pink at sunset, the timbered houses of the Petite France along the water, and a large international community thanks to the European institutions. Town hall ceremonies, receptions in mansions, and portraits on the covered bridges at blue hour.
Winter & the Christmas season
My favourite Alsatian angle: from late November, the villages light up and the region becomes the most magical winter wedding setting in Europe. An elopement under the garlands of Riquewihr, portraits in the falling snow, the blue hour over the illuminated market squares: images that no summer wedding can offer, and dates far easier to find than in high season.
The Vosges & the castles
Above the vines, the Vosges hide lakes, ridgelines and castle silhouettes, with Haut-Koenigsbourg watching over the whole plain. For couples who want wilder portraits, the heights offer panoramas over the vineyards and, on clear days, all the way to the Black Forest. A magnificent setting for an after day session.
Your questions about
a wedding in Alsace
These are the questions that come up most often with couples planning their wedding in Alsace.
- Do you photograph weddings in Alsace?Yes, with great pleasure. I am a destination photographer: couples choose me for my eye, then I come to them. For an Alsace wedding, I arrive the day before, rested, and scout your venue in the evening light. Travel is always included in your personalised quote, so there is nothing to calculate on your side.
- Can foreigners get legally married in France? In most cases no, and that is completely fine. France requires residency for a legal civil marriage, so almost all international couples sign the legal papers at home and celebrate a symbolic ceremony in Alsace. Your ceremony looks and feels exactly the same, with total freedom of location, words and ritual, in the vines, a garden or a historic hall, and I photograph symbolic ceremonies regularly.
- Do you speak English?Honestly: I understand English well and I'm learning to speak it better all the time, though I'm not fully fluent yet. To make sure nothing is ever lost, I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with live translation for any moment that needs precise words. And with 300+ weddings behind me, I anticipate the day visually, so communication is never a barrier to great photographs.
- Is a winter wedding during the Christmas markets really possible?Yes, and it is one of the best kept secrets in Europe. From late November to the end of December, the villages are illuminated, the markets fill the squares and the atmosphere is pure magic. The days are short, so we build your timeline around the light: preparations and ceremony in the bright hours, couple portraits at dusk when the garlands come on, and the illuminated squares as your evening backdrop. Venues and dates are also far easier to secure than in summer.
- What are the most beautiful photo locations in Alsace? The Petite Venise of Colmar at first light, the lanes of Riquewihr and Eguisheim before the visitors arrive, the vines at golden hour anywhere along the wine route, the Petite France in Strasbourg at blue hour, and in December, any illuminated village square. Alsace's compact size means several of these can fit in a single day.
- How many photos will we receive, and when? For a full wedding day, you can count on 600 to 800 individually retouched images, sometimes more depending on the day, delivered within 4 weeks on average in a secure private online gallery, accessible for one year, in high definition. The rendering is soft, luminous and timeless, faithful to the atmosphere of your day. For elopements and shorter coverage, the number of images is adapted and delivery is faster.
- When is the best season to get married in Alsace?Alsace is a rare region with two peak seasons. From May to September, the vines are green, the villages are in flower and the evenings are long. In December, the Christmas markets turn the region into a winter fairytale that exists nowhere else. And October deserves a mention: the vineyards turn gold and copper, magnificent for portraits.
- How does the first meeting work?I offer a first meeting that is free and without obligation, by video call, of about 20 minutes, at a time that works with your time zone. It is the moment to talk about your plans, your date, the settings you dream of, and to see whether my approach matches what you are looking for. I then come back to you quickly with a personalised quote. Your date is confirmed on receipt of the 30% deposit and the contract signed online, with the balance settled a few weeks before the wedding.
Their words,
my finest rewards
We came from Switzerland and could not have dreamed of a better photographer. Stéphane made us feel at ease immediately, he was present all day without us ever noticing him, and the photos are beyond anything we hoped for. Every image brings back the emotion of the moment exactly as we lived it.
We travelled 800 kilometres to work with Stéphane and we would do it again without hesitation. His documentary approach is exactly what we were looking for: nothing staged, nothing forced, just our day as it truly happened. The gallery tells the story of our wedding with a sincerity that moves us every time we open it.
