01 Why trust me with your wedding

Capturing the real,
not the posed

Getting married in Champagne means trusting your photographer with emotions that will never happen twice. The look you exchange between two rows of vines as the evening light turns the hillsides golden, on the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay, or in the garden of a château above the vineyards. The tearful laugh of a parent raising a glass. That fleeting glance during the vows. This is what I come for: the true moment, the one that cannot be staged.

I am Stéphane Joly, a wedding photographer specialised in documentary reportage for more than fifteen years, based in Arras in northern France, about two hours from Reims and Épernay. I photograph weddings and elopements in Champagne for couples travelling from the United States, the United Kingdom and beyond. The region is remarkably easy to reach for international guests: 45 minutes from Paris by TGV, with a direct high speed line from Charles de Gaulle airport. My promise is simple: to be present without intruding, to capture the natural rather than direct it, and to deliver a gallery of 600 to 800 retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average. You can see how I work across the country on my destination wedding page and find my collections on the investment page. Travel to Champagne is always included in your personalised quote, so there is nothing to calculate on your side.

And let me be honest with you, because I'd rather you hear it from me. I have a good understanding of English and I'm learning to speak it better every day. My spoken English is still a work in progress, so to make sure nothing is ever lost between us I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with real-time translation. During the wedding, whenever a moment needs precise words, we communicate smoothly.

Just the two of you

Elopement

A symbolic ceremony in the middle of the vineyards, in the village of Hautvillers where Dom Pérignon rests, or on a terrace overlooking the valley of the Marne. Exchange your vows between the vines, then toast with the wine that was born on these very hillsides. I guide you on locations, light and timing, then photograph your day as it unfolds.

03 My promise in Champagne

Photographing Champagne
the region where celebration was born

Champagne is the only wedding destination in the world whose very name means celebration. For international couples, it offers something Provence cannot: a story everyone at your wedding already knows. The hillsides, houses and cellars of Champagne are listed as Unesco World Heritage, the cathedral of Reims crowned the kings of France for a thousand years, and the wine served at your reception was born on the very slopes around your venue. The region is also among the easiest in France for guests flying in: 45 minutes from Paris by TGV, with a direct high speed connection from Charles de Gaulle airport, no domestic flight and no long transfer.

My approach to documentary reportage rests on a simple conviction: the most beautiful photographs happen when you forget the camera. I stay discreet and unobtrusive, blending naturally into your day without ever directing it. I arrive ahead of the preparations to catch those intimate first moments: hands adjusting a cufflink, the reflection in the mirror when you discover your dress, the quiet words between loved ones. During the ceremony, whether symbolic among the vines, in a château garden or in one of the churches of the wine villages, I position myself with discretion to capture the glances, the tears of joy, the warmth of your closest people. The couple session is a moment I especially look forward to: we slip away together for about twenty minutes, between two rows of vines at golden hour for example, to create natural, unposed images away from the celebration.

Champagne rewards a photographer who understands light. The east and south facing hillsides catch the evening sun in a way that turns the vines to gold, especially in September and October when the leaves change after the harvest. I photograph the details that make this region unique: the sabrage at the cocktail hour, the pyramid of coupes, the cellar visits with your guests, the mist rising from the Marne valley at first light. Based in Arras, about two hours away, travel to Champagne is always included in your personalised quote. You then receive between 600 and 800 individually retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average, in a private online gallery accessible for one year.

04 Iconic places & venues

The most beautiful settings
of Champagne

Five emblematic settings to anchor your wedding in the soul of Champagne.

N° 01 · Unesco hillsides · Golden vines · Hautvillers

The vineyards & Hautvillers

The hillsides of Champagne, listed as Unesco World Heritage, are the emblematic backdrop of any wedding here. Endless rows of vines rolling over the slopes of the Montagne de Reims and the Marne valley, punctuated by wine villages of golden stone. At their heart, Hautvillers, the village where Dom Pérignon perfected his art and where he rests in the abbey church, offers flower-filled lanes, wrought iron signs and panoramic views over the valley. At golden hour, and especially in the weeks after the harvest when the leaves turn, the vineyards become pure gold.

N° 02 · Cathedral · Coronation of kings · Unesco

Reims & its cathedral

The cathedral of Notre-Dame de Reims, where the kings of France were crowned for a thousand years, is one of the great Gothic masterpieces of Europe, listed as Unesco World Heritage with its smiling angel and its Chagall windows. Around it, Reims offers elegant Art Déco streets, the Place Royale, and the great champagne houses with their miles of chalk cellars. A majestic setting for couple portraits, and the natural base for weddings whose guests arrive by TGV from Paris in 45 minutes.

N° 03 · Avenue de Champagne · Great houses · Épernay

Épernay & the Avenue de Champagne

Épernay is the capital of the wine, and its Avenue de Champagne, listed as Unesco World Heritage, aligns the most prestigious houses behind gates and gardens, above a hundred kilometres of cellars. This is where the celebration begins for many of my couples: a glass on a terrace overlooking the avenue, portraits between the mansions at dusk, the elegant façades as a backdrop. A setting that mixes grandeur and festivity like nowhere else.

N° 04 · Chalk cellars · Sabrage · Celebration

The houses & their cellars

Beneath Reims and Épernay run hundreds of kilometres of chalk cellars, some dug in Roman times, where millions of bottles age in the cool darkness. Several houses welcome couples for visits with their guests, tastings and receptions. Photographically, the cellars offer a dramatic, intimate contrast with the golden vineyards above: candlelit stone, endless galleries, and the moment of the sabrage when the celebration truly begins.

N° 05 · Châteaux · Estates · Above the vines

The châteaux & estates of Champagne

The region hides exceptional venues for international couples. The Domaine Les Crayères in Reims, a palatial residence in its own park. The Royal Champagne in Champillon, overlooking the vineyards of the Marne valley. The Château de Sacy, an intimate estate in the heart of the vines of the Montagne de Reims. Or the Château de Juvigny and its lake, a family château made for weekend-long celebrations. I adapt with pleasure to the venue you have chosen.

05 Frequently asked questions

Your questions about
a wedding in Champagne

These are the questions that come up most often with international couples planning their wedding or elopement in Champagne.

  • Do you photograph weddings in Champagne?
Yes, in every season. Based in Arras in northern France, Reims and Épernay are about two hours from my base, an easy drive I know well. My natural, discreet approach adapts to every setting, from the vineyards to the great houses and the châteaux of the region. Travel to Champagne is always included in your personalised quote, so there is nothing to calculate on your side.
  • Can foreigners get legally married in Champagne?
In most cases no, and that is completely fine. France requires residency for a legal civil marriage, so almost all international couples sign the legal papers at home and celebrate a symbolic ceremony in Champagne. Your ceremony looks and feels exactly the same, with total freedom of location, among the vines, in a château garden or on a terrace above the valley, and I photograph symbolic ceremonies regularly.
  • Do you speak English?
Honestly: I understand English well and I'm learning to speak it better all the time, though I'm not fully fluent yet. To make sure nothing is ever lost, I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with live translation for any moment that needs precise words. And with 300+ weddings behind me, I anticipate the day visually, so communication is never a barrier to great photographs.
  • What are the most beautiful photo locations in Champagne?
The vineyards at golden hour are unbeatable, especially the slopes around Hautvillers and the Montagne de Reims, and never more so than in the weeks after the harvest when the leaves turn gold. The Avenue de Champagne in Épernay offers elegant façades and gardens, the cathedral of Reims a majestic Gothic backdrop, and the chalk cellars a dramatic, candlelit contrast beneath the ground.
  • What are the best wedding venues in Champagne?
Among the estates international couples love: the Domaine Les Crayères in Reims and its palatial residence, the Royal Champagne in Champillon overlooking the vineyards of the Marne valley, the Château de Sacy in the heart of the vines, and the Château de Juvigny and its lake for weekend-long family celebrations. Many champagne houses also welcome receptions and cellar visits with your guests. And I adapt with pleasure to the venue you have chosen.
  • How many photos will we receive, and when?
For a full wedding day, you can count on 600 to 800 individually retouched images, sometimes more depending on the day, delivered within 4 weeks on average in a secure private online gallery, accessible for one year, in high definition. The rendering is soft, luminous and timeless, faithful to the atmosphere of your day. For elopements and shorter coverage, the number of images is adapted and delivery is faster.
  • When is the best season to get married in Champagne?
May, June and September offer the best balance of light, mild weather and availability. September is particularly special: the energy of the harvest fills the villages, and in the weeks that follow the vine leaves turn gold, the most beautiful moment of the year on the hillsides. Spring offers fresh green vines and long evenings, and even winter has its charm, with cellar receptions and candlelit dinners.
  • How does the first meeting work?
I offer a first meeting that is free and without obligation, by video call, of about 20 minutes. It is the moment to talk about your plans, your date in Champagne, the settings you dream of, and to see whether my approach matches what you are looking for. I then come back to you quickly with a personalised quote. Your date is confirmed on receipt of the 30% deposit and the contract signed online, with the balance settled a few weeks before the wedding.

Their words,
my finest rewards

We came from Switzerland and could not have dreamed of a better photographer. Stéphane made us feel at ease immediately, he was present all day without us ever noticing him, and the photos are beyond anything we hoped for. Every image brings back the emotion of the moment exactly as we lived it.

Laura & JannikTravelled from Lausanne, Switzerland

We travelled 800 kilometres to work with Stéphane and we would do it again without hesitation. His documentary approach is exactly what we were looking for: nothing staged, nothing forced, just our day as it truly happened. The gallery tells the story of our wedding with a sincerity that moves us every time we open it.
