01 Why trust me with your wedding

Capturing the real,
not the posed

Getting married in Normandy means trusting your photographer with emotions that will never happen twice. The look you exchange on the cliffs of Étretat as the light turns golden, in a cobbled lane of Honfleur, or in the gardens of a Norman château. The tearful laugh of a parent on your arm. That fleeting glance during the vows. This is what I come for: the true moment, the one that cannot be staged.

I am Stéphane Joly, a wedding photographer specialised in documentary reportage for more than fifteen years, based in Arras in northern France. I photograph weddings and elopements across Normandy for couples travelling from the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and beyond. My promise is simple: to be present without intruding, to capture the natural rather than direct it, and to deliver a gallery of 600 to 800 retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average, that tells your day with sincerity. You can see how I work across the country on my destination wedding page and find my collections on the investment page.

And let me be honest with you, because I'd rather you hear it from me. I have a good understanding of English and I'm learning to speak it better every day. My spoken English is still a work in progress, so to make sure nothing is ever lost between us I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with real-time translation. During the wedding, whenever a moment needs precise words, we communicate smoothly. Most of Normandy is within two to three hours of my base, and travel is always included in your personalised quote, so there is nothing to calculate on your side.

03 My promise in Normandy

Photographing Normandy
the light the Impressionists chased

Normandy offers a diversity of settings few regions in the world can rival. You are planning your wedding or elopement here, and you are looking for a photographer able to tell your day with sincerity. I am Stéphane Joly, a photographer specialised in natural, luminous documentary reportage, based in Arras in northern France, with most of Normandy within two to three hours of my base. From the white chalk arches of Étretat that inspired Monet to the old harbour of Honfleur and its tall slate houses, from the sands of the D-Day beaches so meaningful to American families to the silhouette of Mont-Saint-Michel rising from its bay, this region concentrates some of the most photogenic backdrops in Europe. Beyond the coast, the Norman countryside hides châteaux, manors and thatched estates where international couples celebrate in complete privacy.

My approach to documentary reportage rests on a simple conviction: the most beautiful photographs happen when you forget the camera. I stay discreet and unobtrusive, blending naturally into your day without ever directing it. I arrive ahead of the preparations to catch those intimate first moments: hands adjusting a cufflink, the reflection in the mirror when you discover your dress, the quiet words between loved ones. During the ceremony, whether symbolic in a château garden, facing the sea or under the trees of a Norman estate, I position myself with discretion to capture the glances, the tears of joy, the warmth of your closest people. The couple session is a moment I especially look forward to: we slip away together for about twenty minutes, in a setting chosen in advance, the cliffs at golden hour or the lanes of Honfleur for example, to create natural, unposed images away from the celebration.

Weddings in Normandy have taught me to work with every mood of this region: the soft coastal light that drew the Impressionists here two centuries ago, the dramatic skies over the Channel that give images their depth, the golden evenings on the Alabaster Coast, and the green intimacy of the countryside estates. Many of my couples travel from abroad, and some weave places that matter to their family history into their wedding trip, from the landing beaches to the villages their grandparents once knew. I photograph those moments with the same care as the ceremony itself. You then receive between 600 and 800 individually retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average, in a private online gallery accessible for one year.

04 Iconic places & venues

The most beautiful Norman settings
& estates of the region

Five emblematic settings to anchor your wedding in the soul of Normandy.

N° 01 · White chalk arches · Monet · Golden hour

The cliffs of Étretat

The cliffs of Étretat are the most dramatic backdrop on the Normandy coast. Their white chalk arches and needle, painted again and again by Monet and the Impressionists, rise almost ninety metres above the sea. At golden hour, when the day visitors have gone, the cliffs turn amber and the light becomes extraordinary. It is one of the most sought-after elopement settings in France, perfect for symbolic ceremonies on the clifftop and couple portraits that feel larger than life, in every season and under every sky.

N° 02 · Abbey · Bay · Unesco World Heritage

Mont-Saint-Michel

The abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel rising from its bay is one of the most breathtaking silhouettes in Europe, listed as Unesco World Heritage. At low tide, the immense sands around the Mont become a natural stage for couple photographs unlike anywhere else in the world, the two of you alone in a landscape of water, sky and stone. At dusk, when the illuminations begin, the abbey glows above the bay. A setting of rare power for elopements and after day sessions.

N° 03 · Old harbour · Slate houses · Painters

Honfleur

The old harbour of Honfleur feels like stepping into a painting. Tall slate houses reflected in the water, narrow cobbled lanes, the wooden church of Sainte-Catherine and café terraces on the quay compose a townscape that painters have loved for two centuries. It is one of my favourite settings for intimate weddings, engagement and day after sessions, wandering from lane to lane and catching spontaneous moments in the morning light before the town wakes up.

N° 04 · Omaha Beach · Memory · American families

The D-Day beaches

Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery above it hold deep meaning for many American and British families. Some of my couples weave a quiet visit into their wedding trip, a moment of memory within a celebration of love, sometimes in honour of a grandfather who landed here. The immense beaches of the landing coast, with their soft light and endless horizons, also make moving and peaceful settings for couple portraits, far from any crowd.

N° 05 · Châteaux · Manors · Estates

The estates of the Norman countryside

Normandy hides exceptional venues for international couples. The Château de Canisy near Saint-Lô, a thousand years of history still inhabited by the same family. The Domaine d'Ablon in the hills behind Honfleur, a luxury estate of thatched Norman houses made for intimate celebrations. The Château La Chenevière near Bayeux and the landing beaches, with its gardens made for outdoor ceremonies. Or the Château de Sassetot-le-Mauconduit, the former summer residence of Empress Sissi, a short drive from Étretat. I adapt with pleasure to the venue you have chosen.

05 Frequently asked questions

Your questions about
a wedding in Normandy

These are the questions that come up most often with international couples planning their wedding or elopement in Normandy.

  • Do you photograph weddings across Normandy?
Yes, in every season. Based in Arras in northern France, most of Normandy is within two to three hours of my base, from Rouen and Étretat to Honfleur, Bayeux and the landing beaches. My natural, discreet approach adapts to every setting, from the coast to the countryside estates. Travel is always included in your personalised quote, so there is nothing to calculate on your side.
  • Can foreigners get legally married in Normandy?
In most cases no, and that is completely fine. France requires residency for a legal civil marriage, so almost all international couples sign the legal papers at home and celebrate a symbolic ceremony in Normandy. Your ceremony looks and feels exactly the same, with total freedom of location, on a clifftop, in a château garden or facing the sea, and I photograph symbolic ceremonies regularly.
  • Do you speak English?
Honestly: I understand English well and I'm learning to speak it better all the time, though I'm not fully fluent yet. To make sure nothing is ever lost, I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with live translation for any moment that needs precise words. And with 300+ weddings behind me, I anticipate the day visually, so communication is never a barrier to great photographs.
  • What are the most beautiful photo locations in Normandy?
Normandy offers extraordinary variety. The cliffs of Étretat are spectacular at golden hour, once the day visitors have gone. The old harbour of Honfleur offers authentic charm with its slate houses and cobbled lanes, at its best in the early morning. The sands around Mont-Saint-Michel at low tide create images unlike anywhere else. And the D-Day beaches, with their soft light and endless horizons, make moving and peaceful settings, especially meaningful for American families.
  • What are the best wedding venues in Normandy?
The region hides exceptional estates. Among those international couples love: the Château de Canisy near Saint-Lô, a thousand years of history still inhabited by the same family, the Domaine d'Ablon in the hills behind Honfleur for intimate luxury celebrations, the Château La Chenevière near Bayeux and the landing beaches, and the Château de Sassetot-le-Mauconduit, former summer residence of Empress Sissi, near Étretat. And I adapt with pleasure to the venue you have chosen.
  • How many photos will we receive, and when?
For a full wedding day, you can count on 600 to 800 individually retouched images, sometimes more depending on the day, delivered within 4 weeks on average in a secure private online gallery, accessible for one year, in high definition. The rendering is soft, luminous and timeless, faithful to the atmosphere of your day. For elopements and shorter coverage, the number of images is adapted and delivery is faster.
  • When is the best season to get married in Normandy?
May, June and September offer the best balance of light, mild weather and availability. July and August are warm and lively but busier on the coast. Normandy is also beautiful out of season, with dramatic skies over the cliffs and empty beaches that make extraordinary photographs. For Étretat and Mont-Saint-Michel, early morning and the last hour of daylight are always the most magical, whatever the month.
  • How does the first meeting work?
I offer a first meeting that is free and without obligation, by video call, of about 20 minutes. It is the moment to talk about your plans, your date in Normandy, the settings you dream of, and to see whether my approach matches what you are looking for. I then come back to you quickly with a personalised quote. Your date is confirmed on receipt of the 30% deposit and the contract signed online, with the balance settled a few weeks before the wedding.
06 They put their trust in me

Their words,
my finest rewards

We came from Switzerland and could not have dreamed of a better photographer. Stéphane made us feel at ease immediately, he was present all day without us ever noticing him, and the photos are beyond anything we hoped for. Every image brings back the emotion of the moment exactly as we lived it.

Laura & JannikTravelled from Lausanne, Switzerland

We travelled 800 kilometres to work with Stéphane and we would do it again without hesitation. His documentary approach is exactly what we were looking for: nothing staged, nothing forced, just our day as it truly happened. The gallery tells the story of our wedding with a sincerity that moves us every time we open it.
