Wedding Photographer
in Northern France
A natural, luminous documentary approach to capture the true emotion of your wedding in northern France. From the white cliffs of Cap Blanc-Nez facing England to the elegant seafront of Le Touquet, from the ramparts of Montreuil-sur-Mer to the châteaux of the countryside: this is my home region, one hour from Calais, and I know every light of it by heart.
Capturing the real,
not the posed
Getting married in northern France means trusting your photographer with emotions that will never happen twice. The look you exchange on the cliffs of the Opal Coast as the wind lifts a veil, in the cobbled streets of Montreuil-sur-Mer, or under the trees of a château park. The tearful laugh of a parent on your arm. That fleeting glance during the vows. This is what I come for: the true moment, the one that cannot be staged.
I am Stéphane Joly, a wedding photographer specialised in documentary reportage for more than fifteen years, based in Arras. Northern France is not a destination I travel to: it is home. The Opal Coast, Le Touquet, Lille, Arras and the countryside in between are the landscapes I have photographed for over fifteen years, in every season and every light. For couples crossing from the United Kingdom, this is the closest corner of France: 35 minutes through the Eurotunnel or 90 minutes by ferry from Dover to Calais, and you are here. My promise is simple: to be present without intruding, to capture the natural rather than direct it, and to deliver a gallery of 600 to 800 retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average. You can see how I work on my destination wedding page and find my collections on the investment page. Travel across the whole region is included in my prices, with no extra fees.
And let me be honest with you, because I'd rather you hear it from me. I have a good understanding of English and I'm learning to speak it better every day. My spoken English is still a work in progress, so to make sure nothing is ever lost between us I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with real-time translation. During the wedding, whenever a moment needs precise words, we communicate smoothly.
Three moments,
one same story
Before, during, after. Three ways to tell your love story, from the cliffs of the Opal Coast to the châteaux of the North.
Wedding reportage
The heart of my work. Full coverage from the preparations to the party. Symbolic or civil ceremonies, couple portraits on the cliffs or in the dunes at golden hour, dinner and celebration in the châteaux, renovated farms and estates of the region, from the coast to the countryside around Lille and Arras.

Elopement
A symbolic ceremony on the white cliffs of Cap Blanc-Nez, in the dunes of Wissant or on the vast sands of the Opal Coast at low tide. For British couples, the easiest elopement in France: cross in the morning, marry at golden hour. I guide you on locations, light and timing, then photograph your day as it unfolds.

Engagement & After Day
A relaxed couple session in the days before or after your wedding, in your dress and suit or simply as yourselves. The beach cabins of Le Touquet, the ramparts of Montreuil-sur-Mer, the dunes at sunset: the perfect way to enjoy the coast without the timing of the big day, and an easy weekend trip from England.

Photographing my home region
one hour from the English coast
Northern France remains one of the best kept secrets for international weddings. While couples fly to Provence, those in the know discover that the closest corner of France to England hides white chalk cliffs facing Dover, immense beaches, elegant seaside resorts, fortified towns and châteaux surrounded by parkland. From London, you can be here faster than in Cornwall: 35 minutes through the Eurotunnel, around 90 minutes by ferry from Dover to Calais, or a direct train to Lille. For couples from Brussels and Belgium, the region is barely an hour away. And unlike the south, you will not share your wedding photographs with crowds of tourists.
My approach to documentary reportage rests on a simple conviction: the most beautiful photographs happen when you forget the camera. I stay discreet and unobtrusive, blending naturally into your day without ever directing it. I arrive ahead of the preparations to catch those intimate first moments: hands adjusting a cufflink, the reflection in the mirror when you discover your dress, the quiet words between loved ones. During the ceremony, whether civil, religious or symbolic in the open air, I position myself with discretion to capture the glances, the tears of joy, the warmth of your closest people. The couple session is a moment I especially look forward to: we slip away together for about twenty minutes, on the clifftop or in the dunes at golden hour for example, to create natural, unposed images away from the celebration.
This region is where I have photographed most of my 300+ weddings. I know the hour when the light turns golden on the Deux-Caps, the corners of Montreuil-sur-Mer where the evening sun warms the cobbles, the mood of the Opal Coast under a dramatic sky, and the châteaux, renovated farms and estates of the countryside between the coast, Arras and Lille. Based in Arras, about an hour from Calais and the coast, travel across the whole region is included in my prices, with no extra fees. You then receive between 600 and 800 individually retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average, in a private online gallery accessible for one year.
The most beautiful settings
of the Opal Coast & the North
Five emblematic settings to anchor your wedding in the soul of northern France.
Cap Blanc-Nez & Cap Gris-Nez
The Deux-Caps, listed as a Grand Site de France, are the most dramatic backdrop of the Opal Coast. From the white chalk cliffs of Cap Blanc-Nez, you can see the English coast across the Channel on a clear day, a symbol many British couples love: marrying in France, within sight of home. Cap Gris-Nez and its lighthouse, the wild grasslands, the immense beaches below at low tide: at golden hour, the light here rivals anything in France, and the clifftops make breathtaking settings for symbolic ceremonies and couple portraits.
Le Touquet-Paris-Plage
Le Touquet is the elegant heart of the Opal Coast, the Belle Époque resort where Parisians and the British aristocracy once summered. Its immense beach lined with white cabins, its pine forest dotted with Anglo-Norman villas, its lighthouse and its covered market compose a refined, timeless setting. Perfect for chic weddings by the sea, engagement sessions among the beach cabins, and after day portraits in the dunes as the sun sets over the Channel.
Montreuil-sur-Mer
The fortified town of Montreuil-sur-Mer, where Victor Hugo set part of Les Misérables, is a jewel a few kilometres inland. Its ramparts with their tree-lined walk, its steep cobbled streets and flower-filled squares offer an authentic French village atmosphere that international couples adore. In the evening light, the old stones turn golden, and the walk along the ramparts makes couple portraits full of charm and history.
Wissant & the wild beaches
Between the two capes, the bay of Wissant and the wild beaches of the Opal Coast offer immense stretches of sand, grassy dunes and skies that change by the minute. At low tide, the beach becomes a natural stage where the two of you stand alone between water and sky. It is one of my favourite settings for elopements and after day sessions, barefoot in the sand, the wind in a veil, the light of the Channel all around.
The châteaux & estates of the North
Inland, the region hides superb reception venues I know intimately: the Château d'Avelin and its seventy hectare park south of Lille, the Ferme des Templiers near Lille, the Château de Prémesques and its red bricks, and many more châteaux, manors and renovated farms between the coast, Arras and Lille, venues whose light and most beautiful corners I know by heart.
Your questions about
a wedding in northern France
These are the questions that come up most often with international couples planning their wedding or elopement in northern France.
- How easy is it to get here from the UK?Remarkably easy, and it is the region's best kept advantage. The Eurotunnel from Folkestone takes 35 minutes with your car on board, the ferry from Dover to Calais around 90 minutes, and direct trains run from London to Lille. From Calais, the cliffs of the Opal Coast are twenty minutes away and Le Touquet under an hour. Many of my British couples cross in the morning and are on the beach by lunchtime. Guests travel just as easily, which makes the region ideal for weddings with family coming from England.
- Can foreigners get legally married in France? In most cases no, and that is completely fine. France requires residency for a legal civil marriage, so almost all international couples sign the legal papers at home and celebrate a symbolic ceremony here. Your ceremony looks and feels exactly the same, with total freedom of location, on a clifftop, in the dunes or in a château garden, and I photograph symbolic ceremonies regularly.
- Do you speak English?Honestly: I understand English well and I'm learning to speak it better all the time, though I'm not fully fluent yet. To make sure nothing is ever lost, I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with live translation for any moment that needs precise words. And with 300+ weddings behind me, I anticipate the day visually, so communication is never a barrier to great photographs.
- What are the most beautiful photo locations on the Opal Coast? The Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez, listed as a Grand Site de France, are spectacular at golden hour, with the English coast visible across the Channel on a clear day. The beach cabins of Le Touquet and its pine forest offer Belle Époque elegance. The ramparts of Montreuil-sur-Mer give an authentic fortified village atmosphere. And the wild beaches around Wissant, immense at low tide, are made for barefoot portraits between water and sky.
- What are the best wedding venues in the region? The region hides superb estates I know intimately: the Château d'Avelin and its seventy hectare park south of Lille, the Ferme des Templiers, an old fortified farm near Lille, the Château de Prémesques and its red bricks, and many châteaux, manors and renovated farms between the coast, Arras and Lille. Having photographed weddings in most of them, I am happy to share honest advice for your search, and I adapt with pleasure to the venue you have chosen.
- How many photos will we receive, and when? For a full wedding day, you can count on 600 to 800 individually retouched images, sometimes more depending on the day, delivered within 4 weeks on average in a secure private online gallery, accessible for one year, in high definition. The rendering is soft, luminous and timeless, faithful to the atmosphere of your day. For elopements and shorter coverage, the number of images is adapted and delivery is faster.
- When is the best season for a wedding on the Opal Coast?May, June and September offer the best balance of light, mild weather and availability, with long golden evenings on the coast. July and August are lively but busier on the beaches. The Opal Coast is also stunning out of season: dramatic skies, empty beaches and a wild, cinematic mood that makes extraordinary photographs. Whatever the month, the last hour of daylight on the cliffs is always the most magical.
- How does the first meeting work?I offer a first meeting that is free and without obligation, by video call, of about 20 minutes. It is the moment to talk about your plans, your date, the settings you dream of, and to see whether my approach matches what you are looking for. I then come back to you quickly with a personalised quote. Your date is confirmed on receipt of the 30% deposit and the contract signed online, with the balance settled a few weeks before the wedding.
Their words,
my finest rewards
We came from Switzerland and could not have dreamed of a better photographer. Stéphane made us feel at ease immediately, he was present all day without us ever noticing him, and the photos are beyond anything we hoped for. Every image brings back the emotion of the moment exactly as we lived it.
We travelled 800 kilometres to work with Stéphane and we would do it again without hesitation. His documentary approach is exactly what we were looking for: nothing staged, nothing forced, just our day as it truly happened. The gallery tells the story of our wedding with a sincerity that moves us every time we open it.
