Wedding Photographer
in the Oise
A natural, luminous documentary approach to capture the true emotion of your wedding in the Oise. From the château of Chantilly and its mirror of water to the medieval lanes of Senlis, from the fairy-tale towers of Pierrefonds to the royal forests: the first château country north of Paris, twenty five minutes from Charles de Gaulle airport.
Capturing the real,
not the posed
Getting married in the Oise means trusting your photographer with emotions that will never happen twice. The look you exchange in front of the château of Chantilly as the evening light gilds the water, in a cobbled lane of Senlis, or under the centuries-old oaks of a royal forest. The tearful laugh of a parent on your arm. That fleeting glance during the vows. This is what I come for: the true moment, the one that cannot be staged.
I am Stéphane Joly, a wedding photographer specialised in documentary reportage for more than fifteen years, based in Arras in northern France. The Oise is part of my regular territory: I have photographed weddings here for years, and its châteaux, abbeys and forests are landscapes I know season after season. For international couples, the department is a hidden gem: the closest château country to Paris, twenty five minutes from Charles de Gaulle airport and forty minutes from the capital, without Paris prices or Paris crowds. My promise is simple: to be present without intruding, to capture the natural rather than direct it, and to deliver a gallery of 600 to 800 retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average. You can see how I work on my destination wedding page and find my collections on the investment page. Travel across the Oise is included in my prices, so there is nothing to calculate on your side.
And let me be honest with you, because I'd rather you hear it from me. I have a good understanding of English and I'm learning to speak it better every day. My spoken English is still a work in progress, so to make sure nothing is ever lost between us I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with real-time translation. During the wedding, whenever a moment needs precise words, we communicate smoothly.
Three moments,
one same story
Before, during, after. Three ways to tell your love story, from the château of Chantilly to the royal forests.

Photographing the Oise
château country at the gates of Paris
The Oise is the best kept secret of couples who dream of a French château wedding without the logistics of the Loire or the crowds of Versailles. Twenty five minutes from Charles de Gaulle airport and forty minutes from Paris, the department concentrates an astonishing heritage: the château of Chantilly and its great stables, the medieval town of Senlis where the first king of France was elected, the fairy-tale castle of Pierrefonds, the imperial palace of Compiègne, and thousands of hectares of royal forests. Your guests land in Paris in the morning and toast in a château garden by the afternoon, without a domestic flight or a long transfer.
My approach to documentary reportage rests on a simple conviction: the most beautiful photographs happen when you forget the camera. I stay discreet and unobtrusive, blending naturally into your day without ever directing it. I arrive ahead of the preparations to catch those intimate first moments: hands adjusting a cufflink, the reflection in the mirror when you discover your dress, the quiet words between loved ones. During the ceremony, whether civil, religious or symbolic in the open air, I position myself with discretion to capture the glances, the tears of joy, the warmth of your closest people. The couple session is a moment I especially look forward to: we slip away together for about twenty minutes, in a château garden or under the oaks of a forest clearing at golden hour, to create natural, unposed images away from the celebration.
The Oise is part of my regular territory, and it has taught me to work with what makes it unique: the evening light on pale stone, the geometry of the French gardens, the cathedral-like light under the great oaks of the forests of Chantilly, Halatte and Compiègne, and the intimacy of the medieval lanes of Senlis at dusk. Based in Arras, travel across the Oise is included in my prices. You then receive between 600 and 800 individually retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average, in a private online gallery accessible for one year.
The most beautiful settings
of the Oise
Five emblematic settings to anchor your wedding in the soul of the Oise.
Chantilly
The château of Chantilly, rising from its mirror of water, is one of the most romantic silhouettes in France. Its French gardens designed by Le Nôtre, its English garden and its hamlet, its great stables considered the most beautiful in the world, and the elegant town around them compose a setting worthy of a princely wedding. At the end of the day, when the visitors have gone and the low sun gilds the stone and the water, the estate offers couple portraits of rare majesty.
Senlis
Senlis is one of the best preserved medieval towns in France, and one of its best kept secrets. Within its Gallo-Roman walls, cobbled lanes wind between pale stone façades, flowered courtyards and the slender spire of the cathedral, where Hugues Capet was elected first king of France. Film directors love it, and so do I: in the golden evening light, every corner of Senlis becomes a timeless backdrop for couple portraits full of intimacy and history.
Pierrefonds
The castle of Pierrefonds, rebuilt by Viollet-le-Duc for Napoleon III, is the fairy-tale castle par excellence: massive towers, drawbridge, machicolations and rooftops straight out of a storybook. It has served as a set for countless films and series. Rising above its village and lake at the edge of the forest of Compiègne, it makes a spectacular and unexpected backdrop for couples who dream of something grander than life.
The royal forests
The forests of Chantilly, Halatte, Ermenonville and Compiègne cover tens of thousands of hectares of centuries-old oaks and beeches, crossed by straight rides designed for royal hunts. Under the canopy, the light falls like in a cathedral. In spring the undergrowth turns fresh green, in autumn pure gold. These clearings and forest paths are among my favourite settings for couple sessions, intimate, timeless and yours alone.
The châteaux & estates of the Oise
The department hides exceptional venues for international couples. The Château d'Ermenonville, where Rousseau spent his last days, surrounded by its moats and park. The Abbaye Royale de Chaalis and its rose garden. The Château de Montvillargenne, a grand Anglo-Norman manor near Chantilly. Or the Château de la Tour in Gouvieux, overlooking the valley. I adapt with pleasure to the venue you have chosen.
Your questions about
a wedding in the Oise
These are the questions that come up most often with international couples planning their wedding or elopement in the Oise.
- How easy is it to reach the Oise for international guests? It is probably the easiest château region in France. Chantilly is about twenty five minutes from Charles de Gaulle airport and forty minutes from central Paris, with direct trains from the Gare du Nord. Your guests land in the morning and are in a château garden by the afternoon, without a domestic flight, a long transfer or a night on the road. Many couples combine a Paris stay with a château wedding in the Oise.
- Can foreigners get legally married in France? In most cases no, and that is completely fine. France requires residency for a legal civil marriage, so almost all international couples sign the legal papers at home and celebrate a symbolic ceremony here. Your ceremony looks and feels exactly the same, with total freedom of location, in a château garden, an abbey park or a forest clearing, and I photograph symbolic ceremonies regularly.
- Do you speak English?Honestly: I understand English well and I'm learning to speak it better all the time, though I'm not fully fluent yet. To make sure nothing is ever lost, I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with live translation for any moment that needs precise words. And with 300+ weddings behind me, I anticipate the day visually, so communication is never a barrier to great photographs.
- What are the most beautiful photo locations in the Oise? The château of Chantilly and its mirror of water at the end of the day, the medieval lanes of Senlis in the golden evening light, the fairy-tale towers of Pierrefonds above its lake, and the royal forests where the light falls through the oaks like in a cathedral. In autumn, the forest paths turn pure gold, and in spring the château gardens are at their freshest.
- What are the best wedding venues in the Oise?Among the estates international couples love: the Château d'Ermenonville and its moats, where Rousseau spent his last days, the Abbaye Royale de Chaalis and its rose garden, the Château de Montvillargenne near Chantilly, and the Château de la Tour in Gouvieux overlooking the valley. The area around Chantilly and Senlis concentrates a remarkable density of châteaux, manors and estates. And I adapt with pleasure to the venue you have chosen.
- How many photos will we receive, and when? For a full wedding day, you can count on 600 to 800 individually retouched images, sometimes more depending on the day, delivered within 4 weeks on average in a secure private online gallery, accessible for one year, in high definition. The rendering is soft, luminous and timeless, faithful to the atmosphere of your day. For elopements and shorter coverage, the number of images is adapted and delivery is faster.
- When is the best season to get married in the Oise?May, June and September offer the best balance of light, mild weather and availability, with the château gardens in bloom and long golden evenings. July and August are warm and festive. And autumn is the Oise's secret season: the royal forests turn gold and copper, the light softens, and the estates glow in the low sun. Whatever the month, the last hour of daylight is always the most magical.
- How does the first meeting work?I offer a first meeting that is free and without obligation, by video call, of about 20 minutes. It is the moment to talk about your plans, your date, the settings you dream of, and to see whether my approach matches what you are looking for. I then come back to you quickly with a personalised quote. Your date is confirmed on receipt of the 30% deposit and the contract signed online, with the balance settled a few weeks before the wedding.
Their words,
my finest rewards
We came from Switzerland and could not have dreamed of a better photographer. Stéphane made us feel at ease immediately, he was present all day without us ever noticing him, and the photos are beyond anything we hoped for. Every image brings back the emotion of the moment exactly as we lived it.
We travelled 800 kilometres to work with Stéphane and we would do it again without hesitation. His documentary approach is exactly what we were looking for: nothing staged, nothing forced, just our day as it truly happened. The gallery tells the story of our wedding with a sincerity that moves us every time we open it.
