Wedding Photographer
in Burgundy
A natural, luminous documentary approach to capture the true emotion of your wedding in Burgundy. The most storied vineyards on earth, honey-coloured villages, châteaux among the vines and glazed-tile rooftops: a region where wine, history and the French art of living share the same table.
Capturing the real,
not the posed
Getting married in Burgundy means trusting your photographer with emotions that will never happen twice. The look you exchange between two rows of vines on the Côte d'Or, in the courtyard of a château, or under the glazed rooftops of Beaune. The tearful laugh of a parent on your arm. That fleeting glance during the vows. This is what I come for: the true moment, the one that cannot be staged.
I am Stéphane Joly, a wedding photographer specialised in documentary reportage for more than fifteen years, based in Arras in northern France. I am a destination photographer: couples choose me for my eye, then I come to them, and for every Burgundy wedding I arrive the day before, rested, with your venue scouted in the evening light. Burgundy draws wine lovers from around the world, Americans first among them, to marry where their favourite bottles were born, and my promise never changes: to be present without intruding, to capture the natural rather than direct it, and to deliver a gallery of 600 to 800 retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average. You can see how I work with international couples on my destination wedding page and find my collections on the investment page. Travel to Burgundy is always included in your personalised quote, so there is nothing to calculate on your side.
And let me be honest with you, because I'd rather you hear it from me. I have a good understanding of English and I'm learning to speak it better every day. My spoken English is still a work in progress, so to make sure nothing is ever lost between us I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with real-time translation. During the wedding, whenever a moment needs precise words, we communicate smoothly.
Three moments,
one same story
Before, during, after. Three ways to tell your love story, from the cellar to the vines.
Wedding reportage
The heart of my work. Full coverage from the preparations to the party. Ceremonies at the edge of the climats, couple portraits between the rows at golden hour, dinner in a vaulted cellar among the barrels, and the warmth of a Burgundian table that never wants the evening to end.

Elopement
A symbolic ceremony between two rows of vines at sunrise, on the hill of Vézelay or in the gardens of a small château. For wine-loving couples, an elopement in Burgundy has a poetry all its own: saying yes in the very landscape that fills your glasses at home.

Engagement & After Day
A relaxed couple session in the days before or after your wedding, in your dress and suit or simply as yourselves. The vines of the Côte de Beaune in the evening light, the lanes of Dijon, the courtyard of the Hospices: the perfect way to stretch your wedding into a whole Burgundian weekend.

Photographing Burgundy,
land of wine and light
Burgundy is the region where France concentrates its essence: the climats of the Côte d'Or, listed as Unesco World Heritage, a mosaic of tiny vineyard parcels whose names alone make wine lovers dream. Around them, honey-stone villages, the glazed rooftops of Beaune, the ducal palaces of Dijon, and châteaux planted in the middle of the vines. Couples come here from the United States, Britain and beyond for a reason no other region can offer: marrying inside the landscape of their favourite wine.
My approach to documentary reportage rests on a simple conviction: the most beautiful photographs happen when you forget the camera. I stay discreet and unobtrusive, blending naturally into your day without ever directing it. I arrive ahead of the preparations to catch those intimate first moments: hands adjusting a cufflink, the reflection in the mirror when you discover your dress, the quiet words between loved ones. During the ceremony, at the edge of the vines, in a château garden or a village church, I position myself with discretion to capture the glances, the tears of joy, the warmth of your closest people. The couple session is a moment I especially look forward to: we slip away for about twenty minutes at golden hour, between the rows of vines, to create natural, unposed images away from the celebration.
Burgundy asks a photographer to love its rhythms: the low evening light raking across the parcels, the geometry of the rows, the amber glow of the harvest weeks in September, and the candlelit warmth of a dinner in a barrel cellar, which I photograph without flash to keep its soul. For your wedding, I arrive the day before, rested, with your domaine scouted in the evening light, and travel is always included in your personalised quote. You then receive between 600 and 800 individually retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average, in a private online gallery accessible for one year.
The most beautiful settings
of Burgundy
Five emblematic settings to anchor your wedding in the soul of Burgundy.
The vineyards of the Côte d'Or
The golden slope that gave the world its most famous wines: a fifty-kilometre ribbon of vines from Dijon to Santenay, divided into the climats listed as Unesco World Heritage. A ceremony at the edge of the parcels, a cocktail in the rows at sunset, portraits with the villages of Gevrey-Chambertin or Meursault on the horizon: for wine lovers, there is simply no more meaningful place to marry.
Beaune
Beaune is the beating heart of wine Burgundy: the flamboyant glazed rooftops of the Hospices, the ramparts, the cobbled lanes and the cellars that run beneath the whole town. It is the natural base camp for your guests, a jewel for couple portraits, and in November the famous wine auction fills the town with a festive atmosphere all its own.
Dijon
Dijon brings the grandeur: the palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, the polychrome rooftops, the medieval lanes and one of the great gastronomic scenes of France. Town hall ceremonies in a historic setting, receptions in mansions, and elegant urban portraits at blue hour.
The châteaux & wine domaines
Burgundy's weddings happen in its châteaux and family domaines: courtyards of golden stone, gardens facing the vines, and the region's signature, dinners and parties in vaulted barrel cellars, candlelit among the casks. Everything in one estate, which gives a reportage its unity from the preparations to the last dance of the night's first hours.
The timeless Burgundy
Beyond the vines, Burgundy hides a slower landscape: the eternal hill of Vézelay, the canals lined with plane trees, the white Charolais cattle in the meadows, the Romanesque churches. For elopements and after day sessions, this quieter Burgundy offers images full of peace, far from every crowd.
Your questions about
a wedding in Burgundy
These are the questions that come up most often with international couples planning their wedding in Burgundy.
- Do you photograph weddings in Burgundy?Yes, with great pleasure. I am a destination photographer: couples choose me for my eye, then I come to them. For a Burgundy wedding, I arrive the day before, rested, and scout your domaine in the evening light. Travel is always included in your personalised quote. And for your guests, Burgundy is simple: Dijon is about 1h40 from Paris by TGV, and Beaune just beyond.
- Can foreigners get legally married in France? In most cases no, and that is completely fine. France requires residency for a legal civil marriage, so almost all international couples sign the legal papers at home and celebrate a symbolic ceremony in Burgundy. Your ceremony looks and feels exactly the same, with total freedom of location, words and ritual, at the edge of the vines, in a château garden or a barrel cellar, and I photograph symbolic ceremonies regularly.
- Do you speak English?Honestly: I understand English well and I'm learning to speak it better all the time, though I'm not fully fluent yet. To make sure nothing is ever lost, I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with live translation for any moment that needs precise words. And with 300+ weddings behind me, I anticipate the day visually, so communication is never a barrier to great photographs.
- Can we get married in the vineyards themselves?Symbolic ceremonies at the edge of the vines are absolutely possible, always with the agreement of the domaine or the landowner, which your venue or planner arranges. The parcels themselves are working agricultural land and precious ones at that, so ceremonies usually take place on the grass borders, the domaine's terrace or a garden facing the rows. Visually, the result is exactly the dream: you, the vows, and the vines to the horizon.
- How do you photograph a dinner in a barrel cellar? With respect for its atmosphere. A vaulted cellar lit by candles is one of the most beautiful settings Burgundy offers, and the worst thing a photographer can do is flatten it with direct flash. I work with fast lenses and high sensitivity to keep the golden warmth of the candlelight, using indirect flash only when the dancing starts and the energy calls for it.
- How many photos will we receive, and when? For a full wedding day, you can count on 600 to 800 individually retouched images, sometimes more depending on the day, delivered within 4 weeks on average in a secure private online gallery, accessible for one year, in high definition. The rendering is soft, luminous and timeless, faithful to the atmosphere of your day. For elopements and shorter coverage, the number of images is adapted and delivery is faster.
- When is the best season to get married in Burgundy?May, June and September are ideal, with September holding a special magic: the harvest weeks, when the vines turn amber, the domaines hum with activity and the whole region celebrates. Late October paints the Côte d'Or gold and copper, spectacular for portraits. July and August are warm and festive, with long evenings in the courtyards.
- How does the first meeting work?I offer a first meeting that is free and without obligation, by video call, of about 20 minutes, at a time that works with your time zone. It is the moment to talk about your plans, your domaine or your search for one, and to see whether my approach matches what you are looking for. I then come back to you quickly with a personalised quote. Your date is confirmed on receipt of the 30% deposit and the contract signed online, with the balance settled a few weeks before the wedding.
Their words,
my finest rewards
We came from Switzerland and could not have dreamed of a better photographer. Stéphane made us feel at ease immediately, he was present all day without us ever noticing him, and the photos are beyond anything we hoped for. Every image brings back the emotion of the moment exactly as we lived it.
We travelled 800 kilometres to work with Stéphane and we would do it again without hesitation. His documentary approach is exactly what we were looking for: nothing staged, nothing forced, just our day as it truly happened. The gallery tells the story of our wedding with a sincerity that moves us every time we open it.
