01 Why trust me with your wedding

Capturing the real,
not the posed

Getting married in the Loire Valley means trusting your photographer with emotions that will never happen twice, in the setting that invented the very idea of the French château wedding. The look you exchange at the top of a tufa stone staircase, in a French garden drawn three centuries ago, or under the trees along the river. The tearful laugh of a parent on your arm. That fleeting glance during the vows. This is what I come for: the true moment, the one that cannot be staged.

I am Stéphane Joly, a wedding photographer specialised in documentary reportage for more than fifteen years, based in Arras in northern France. Châteaux are where a large share of my 300+ weddings have taken place, and the Loire Valley is their kingdom: a Unesco World Heritage landscape where hundreds of estates, from royal icons to family manors, welcome couples from around the world. I am a destination photographer: couples choose me for my eye, then I come to them, arriving the day before your wedding so the morning starts calmly. My promise is simple: to be present without intruding, to capture the natural rather than direct it, and to deliver a gallery of 600 to 800 retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average. You can see how I work with international couples on my destination wedding page and find my collections on the investment page. Travel to the Loire Valley is always included in your personalised quote, so there is nothing to calculate on your side.

And let me be honest with you, because I'd rather you hear it from me. I have a good understanding of English and I'm learning to speak it better every day. My spoken English is still a work in progress, so to make sure nothing is ever lost between us I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with real-time translation. During the wedding, whenever a moment needs precise words, we communicate smoothly.

03 My promise in the Loire Valley

Photographing the garden of France
with a documentary eye

The Loire Valley is where the French art of living was written in stone: a Unesco World Heritage landscape of châteaux, gardens, vineyards and villages of white tufa, strung along the last wild river of Europe. It is the most famous château region in the world, and yet its weddings are rarely about grandeur alone. What couples fall for here is the gentleness: the soft light off the river, the gardens in May, the cellars carved into the rock where the party goes late, the sense of celebrating inside a landscape painting.

My approach to documentary reportage rests on a simple conviction: the most beautiful photographs happen when you forget the camera. I stay discreet and unobtrusive, blending naturally into your day without ever directing it. I arrive ahead of the preparations to catch those intimate first moments: hands adjusting a cufflink in a château suite, the reflection in a gilded mirror when you discover your dress, the quiet words between loved ones. During the ceremony, in the gardens, the chapel or the orangery, I position myself with discretion to capture the glances, the tears of joy, the warmth of your closest people. The couple session is a moment I especially look forward to: we slip away for about twenty minutes at golden hour, into the alleys of the garden or down to the river, to create natural, unposed images with the château as your backdrop rather than your prison.

After a large share of 300+ weddings spent in châteaux and historic estates, I know how these places breathe: where the light falls in a courtyard at five in the afternoon, which staircase deserves your descent, and how to photograph a first dance in a vaulted tufa cellar without killing its atmosphere. For your Loire wedding, I arrive the day before, rested, with your estate scouted in the evening light, and travel is always included in your personalised quote. You then receive between 600 and 800 individually retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average, in a private online gallery accessible for one year.

04 Iconic places & settings

The most beautiful settings
of the Loire Valley

Five emblematic settings to anchor your wedding in the soul of the valley.

N° 01 · Chambord · Chenonceau · Amboise

The royal châteaux

The icons that made the valley famous: Chambord and its impossible rooftops, Chenonceau arched over the Cher, Amboise above its royal town. These monuments set the tone of the whole region, and while weddings themselves happen in private estates, the icons make breathtaking backdrops for an engagement or after day session, subject to each site's rules, which I help you navigate. Imagine your portraits at first light, before the visitors arrive.

N° 02 · Private estates · Whole weekends · Touraine & Anjou

The wedding châteaux

The true secret of the valley: hundreds of privately owned châteaux and manors, from Renaissance jewels to family estates in the vines, that host weddings and privatise for the whole weekend. Suites for the preparations, gardens for the ceremony, an orangery as plan B and cellars for the party: everything in one place, which gives a reportage its unity. Around Tours, Amboise, Saumur and Angers, the choice is the widest in France.

N° 03 · French gardens · Golden hour

The gardens

The Loire is the valley of gardens, with Villandry as their world-famous manifesto. In the estates that host weddings, the parterres, the alleys of lime trees and the kitchen gardens give ceremony and portraits a geometry that photographs magnificently, especially at golden hour, when the low sun stretches the shadows of the hedges across the gravel.

N° 04 · Vouvray · Saumur · Troglodyte cellars

The vineyards & the tufa

The valley is also a great wine land: Vouvray, Chinon, Saumur. Ceremonies at the edge of the vines, cocktails in the rows at sunset, and the region's signature: the troglodyte cellars carved into the white tufa, where dinners and parties take on a candlelit magic that exists nowhere else in France.

N° 05 · The river · Villages · Soft light

The Loire itself

The last wild river of Europe gives the valley its light: soft, silvery, changing with the sky. The banks at Amboise or Montsoreau, the sandbanks at low water, the traditional flat boats: for couple portraits at the end of the day, the river offers the valley's most romantic and most underrated setting.

05 Frequently asked questions

Your questions about
a wedding in the Loire Valley

These are the questions that come up most often with international couples planning their wedding in the Loire Valley.

  • Do you photograph weddings in the Loire Valley?
Yes, with great pleasure. I am a destination photographer: couples choose me for my eye, then I come to them. For a Loire wedding, I arrive the day before, rested, and scout your estate in the evening light. Travel is always included in your personalised quote, so there is nothing to calculate on your side. And for your guests, the valley is easy: Tours is about an hour from Paris by TGV.
  • Can foreigners get legally married in France?
In most cases no, and that is completely fine. France requires residency for a legal civil marriage, so almost all international couples sign the legal papers at home and celebrate a symbolic ceremony at their château. Your ceremony looks and feels exactly the same, with total freedom of location, words and ritual, in the gardens, the orangery or the chapel, and I photograph symbolic ceremonies regularly.
  • Do you speak English?
Honestly: I understand English well and I'm learning to speak it better all the time, though I'm not fully fluent yet. To make sure nothing is ever lost, I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with live translation for any moment that needs precise words. And with 300+ weddings behind me, I anticipate the day visually, so communication is never a barrier to great photographs.
  • Can we do a couple session at Chambord or Chenonceau?
The royal monuments make breathtaking backdrops for an engagement or after day session, and many couples plan one the day after their wedding, in their dress and suit. Each site has its own rules about photography sessions, which can change, so we check the conditions of your chosen setting together while planning. And the surroundings of the icons, the riverbanks, the gardens and the villages, are often just as photogenic and completely free.
  • What if it rains on our château wedding?
A Loire château is the best possible place for rain. Orangeries, galleries, staircases and the region's famous tufa cellars: the plan B is often as beautiful as the plan A, and the soft light of a grey day is wonderful for portraits. I always identify the indoor options during my scouting the day before, so nothing catches us off guard.
  • How many photos will we receive, and when?
For a full wedding day, you can count on 600 to 800 individually retouched images, sometimes more depending on the day, delivered within 4 weeks on average in a secure private online gallery, accessible for one year, in high definition. The rendering is soft, luminous and timeless, faithful to the atmosphere of your day. For elopements and shorter coverage, the number of images is adapted and delivery is faster.
  • When is the best season to get married in the Loire Valley?
May and June show the gardens at their absolute peak, with roses on the tufa walls and long golden evenings. September brings the harvest atmosphere in the vines and an amber light on the river. July and August are warm and festive. And the valley works out of season too: a château with the fires lit, the mist on the Loire in the morning, and the estate entirely yours.
  • How does the first meeting work?
I offer a first meeting that is free and without obligation, by video call, of about 20 minutes, at a time that works with your time zone. It is the moment to talk about your plans, your château or your search for one, and to see whether my approach matches what you are looking for. I then come back to you quickly with a personalised quote. Your date is confirmed on receipt of the 30% deposit and the contract signed online, with the balance settled a few weeks before the wedding.
06 They put their trust in me

Their words,
my finest rewards

We came from Switzerland and could not have dreamed of a better photographer. Stéphane made us feel at ease immediately, he was present all day without us ever noticing him, and the photos are beyond anything we hoped for. Every image brings back the emotion of the moment exactly as we lived it.

Laura & JannikTravelled from Lausanne, Switzerland

We travelled 800 kilometres to work with Stéphane and we would do it again without hesitation. His documentary approach is exactly what we were looking for: nothing staged, nothing forced, just our day as it truly happened. The gallery tells the story of our wedding with a sincerity that moves us every time we open it.
