Wedding Photographer
in the South of France
A natural, luminous documentary approach to capture the true emotion of your wedding in the South of France. From the lavender fields of Provence to the hilltop villages of the Luberon, from the terraces of the Riviera to the bastides among the vines: I travel throughout France to photograph the weddings of couples who choose my eye, wherever they say yes.
Capturing the real,
not the posed
Getting married in the South of France means trusting your photographer with emotions that will never happen twice. The look you exchange in a lavender field as the cicadas sing, on the terrace of a bastide overlooking the vines, or in the golden lanes of a hilltop village. The tearful laugh of a parent on your arm. That fleeting glance during the vows. This is what I come for: the true moment, the one that cannot be staged.
I am Stéphane Joly, a wedding photographer specialised in documentary reportage for more than fifteen years, based in Arras in northern France. And let me be clear about what that means: I am a destination photographer. Couples choose me for my eye and my way of telling a day, then I come to them, wherever their wedding takes place. Some of my couples have travelled 800 kilometres to work with me; for a wedding in Provence or on the Riviera, I simply make the journey in the other direction, by TGV or by plane, arriving the day before so that your morning starts calmly. My promise is simple: to be present without intruding, to capture the natural rather than direct it, and to deliver a gallery of 600 to 800 retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average. You can see how I work on my destination wedding page and find my collections on the investment page. Travel to the South is always included in your personalised quote, so there is nothing to calculate on your side.
And let me be honest with you, because I'd rather you hear it from me. I have a good understanding of English and I'm learning to speak it better every day. My spoken English is still a work in progress, so to make sure nothing is ever lost between us I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with real-time translation. During the wedding, whenever a moment needs precise words, we communicate smoothly.
Three moments,
one same story
Before, during, after. Three ways to tell your love story, from the lavender fields to the terraces above the sea.
Wedding reportage
The heart of my work. Full coverage from the preparations to the party. Ceremonies under the plane trees of a bastide, couple portraits in the vines or the lavender at golden hour, long southern dinners under the string lights, and the warmth of a celebration that lasts into the night air.

Elopement
A symbolic ceremony in a lavender field at sunrise, in the golden lanes of a hilltop village or on a terrace above the Mediterranean. The South is the dream setting for elopements in France, and just the two of you means total freedom of place and hour. I guide you on locations, light and timing, then photograph your day as it unfolds.

Photographing the South
with a documentary eye
The South of France is the most dreamed-of wedding destination in Europe, and for good reason: the lavender fields of Provence in full bloom, the hilltop villages of golden stone, the bastides and domaines among the vines and olive trees, and the Riviera with its terraces suspended between sky and sea. But precisely because it is so photographed, the South deserves better than postcard images. My conviction is that the most beautiful wedding photographs of Provence are not the posed ones in front of the lavender: they are the true moments that happen there, the laughter, the wind in a veil, a grandmother's hand, the last dance under the plane trees.
My approach to documentary reportage rests on a simple conviction: the most beautiful photographs happen when you forget the camera. I stay discreet and unobtrusive, blending naturally into your day without ever directing it. I arrive ahead of the preparations to catch those intimate first moments: hands adjusting a cufflink, the reflection in the mirror when you discover your dress, the quiet words between loved ones. During the ceremony, under the trees of a bastide or on a terrace above the sea, I position myself with discretion to capture the glances, the tears of joy, the warmth of your closest people. The couple session is a moment I especially look forward to: we slip away together for about twenty minutes at golden hour, in the vines, the lavender or the lanes of a village, to create natural, unposed images away from the celebration.
Working in the South asks a photographer to master its light: the hard midday sun that calls for shade and patience, the long golden evenings that reward a well planned timeline, the blue hour over the hills when the heat finally falls. I plan your day around that light, and I arrive the day before your wedding so that the morning starts calmly, with scouting done and nothing left to chance. Travel to the South is always included in your personalised quote, by TGV or by plane. You then receive between 600 and 800 individually retouched photographs, within 4 weeks on average, in a private online gallery accessible for one year.
The most beautiful settings
of the South of France
Five emblematic settings to anchor your wedding in the soul of the South.
Provence & the lavender fields
The lavender fields of Provence, in bloom from mid June to mid July, are the most iconic wedding backdrop in France. Around them, the Luberon and the Alpilles align hilltop villages of golden stone: Gordes, Bonnieux, Les Baux, Saint-Rémy. Between the rows of lavender at sunrise or in the lanes of a village at dusk, the light of Provence gives every image its warmth. And outside the lavender weeks, the vines, olive groves and stone remain, timeless in every season.
The French Riviera
The Côte d'Azur offers what no other coast in Europe can: terraces suspended between sky and Mediterranean, the medieval village of Èze high above the water, the lanes and ramparts of Saint-Paul-de-Vence beloved by painters, the elegance of Cap Ferrat and the old ports. At the end of the day, when the heat falls and the sea turns silver, the Riviera light becomes pure cinema for couple portraits.
The bastides & wine domaines
The bastides and wine domaines of Provence and Occitanie are where most southern weddings actually happen: honey-coloured farmhouses under the plane trees, courtyards strung with lights, ceremonies at the edge of the vines, long tables in the evening air. These estates concentrate the whole day in one place, which gives a reportage its unity: preparations, ceremony, cocktail among the olive trees and party under the stars, all in the same golden light.
The wild South
Beyond the icons, the South hides wilder settings for couples who want their photographs to feel like an adventure: the turquoise water and cliffs of the Gorges du Verdon, the white limestone of the Calanques, the hills of the arrière-pays where the only sound is the cicadas. For elopements especially, these landscapes offer what the famous spots cannot: solitude, scale, and images that belong to you alone.
Planning a southern wedding from abroad
The South is well served for international guests: airports at Nice and Marseille, TGV stations at Avignon and Aix, and a dense network of venues used to welcoming couples from abroad. The keys to a smooth day are a timeline built around the light, shade for your guests at the hottest hours, and a photographer who arrives the day before. I help you with all three from our first call.
Your questions about
a wedding in the South
These are the questions that come up most often with international couples planning their wedding in the South of France.
- You are based in northern France. Do you really travel to the South?Yes, and gladly. I am a destination photographer: couples choose me for my eye, then I come to them. Some of my couples have travelled 800 kilometres to work with me, and I make the journey in the other direction with the same enthusiasm. I travel by TGV or plane, arrive the day before your wedding so the morning starts calmly, and scout your venue in the evening light. Travel is always included in your personalised quote, so there is nothing to calculate on your side.
- Can foreigners get legally married in France? In most cases no, and that is completely fine. France requires residency for a legal civil marriage, so almost all international couples sign the legal papers at home and celebrate a symbolic ceremony in the South. Your ceremony looks and feels exactly the same, with total freedom of location, in a lavender field, under the plane trees of a bastide or on a terrace above the sea, and I photograph symbolic ceremonies regularly.
- Do you speak English?Honestly: I understand English well and I'm learning to speak it better all the time, though I'm not fully fluent yet. To make sure nothing is ever lost, I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with live translation for any moment that needs precise words. And with 300+ weddings behind me, I anticipate the day visually, so communication is never a barrier to great photographs.
- When is the lavender in bloom?Roughly from mid June to mid July, depending on the altitude and the year, with the plateau de Valensole and the Luberon as the most famous areas. If lavender photographs matter to you, plan your date in that window and tell your venue early. Outside those weeks, Provence keeps its vines, olive groves, golden stone and light: many of my favourite southern images have no lavender in them at all.
- How do you handle the strong southern light and the heat?By planning around it. The midday sun of the South is hard and vertical, so I build your timeline with your planner or venue to place the couple session at golden hour, keep ceremonies in the shade of the plane trees when possible, and use the blue hour for the most cinematic images. Heat is part of a southern wedding: I photograph the fans, the rosé on ice and the bare feet in the fountain with the same affection as the vows.
- How many photos will we receive, and when? For a full wedding day, you can count on 600 to 800 individually retouched images, sometimes more depending on the day, delivered within 4 weeks on average in a secure private online gallery, accessible for one year, in high definition. The rendering is soft, luminous and timeless, faithful to the atmosphere of your day. For elopements and shorter coverage, the number of images is adapted and delivery is faster.
- When is the best season to get married in the South?May, June and September are ideal: warm without the crushing heat, long evenings, venues and roads not yet saturated. Late June adds the lavender. July and August are the festive heart of summer, at the price of heat and crowds on the coast. And September in the vines, with the harvest approaching and the light turning amber, may be the South's best kept secret.
- How does the first meeting work?I offer a first meeting that is free and without obligation, by video call, of about 20 minutes. It is the moment to talk about your plans, your venue in the South, the settings you dream of, and to see whether my approach matches what you are looking for. I then come back to you quickly with a personalised quote. Your date is confirmed on receipt of the 30% deposit and the contract signed online, with the balance settled a few weeks before the wedding.
Their words,
my finest rewards
We came from Switzerland and could not have dreamed of a better photographer. Stéphane made us feel at ease immediately, he was present all day without us ever noticing him, and the photos are beyond anything we hoped for. Every image brings back the emotion of the moment exactly as we lived it.
We travelled 800 kilometres to work with Stéphane and we would do it again without hesitation. His documentary approach is exactly what we were looking for: nothing staged, nothing forced, just our day as it truly happened. The gallery tells the story of our wedding with a sincerity that moves us every time we open it.
