Elopement Photographer
in Iceland
A natural, luminous documentary approach to capture the true emotion of your elopement in Iceland. Black sand beaches, waterfalls you can walk behind, glacier lagoons and light that belongs to another planet: I have photographed love there, and I dream of going back with you.
Capturing the real,
at the edge of the world
Eloping to Iceland means trusting your photographer with emotions that will never happen twice, in landscapes that dwarf everything else. Your vows shouted over the wind on a black beach, the laugh when the spray of a waterfall catches you, the silence in front of a glacier lagoon. This is what I come for: the true moment, the one that cannot be staged, in the most dramatic setting on earth.
I am Stéphane Joly, a wedding photographer specialised in documentary reportage for more than fifteen years, based in northern France. Iceland is not an abstraction for me: I have photographed there, and that journey left its mark on my work and on the couple who trusted me with it, Maëlle and Matthieu, whose words you will read below. An elopement in Iceland is a real adventure: the weather changes four times a day, the wind writes half of the story, and the light, from the midnight sun of summer to the low gold of winter, decides everything. My job is to plan around all of it, then let your day unfold and document it as it truly happens. You will receive a gallery of individually retouched photographs adapted to your coverage, delivered in a private online gallery, and for a full wedding day that means 600 to 800 images within 4 weeks on average. Travel for an Iceland elopement is studied case by case and included transparently in your personalised quote, flights and accommodation calculated at their real cost, and I arrive ahead of your day to scout with you.
And let me be honest with you, because I'd rather you hear it from me. I have a good understanding of English and I'm learning to speak it better every day. My spoken English is still a work in progress, so to make sure nothing is ever lost between us I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with real-time translation. On your day, whenever a moment needs precise words, we communicate smoothly.
Three ways to say yes
at the edge of the world
Elopement in Iceland
Just the two of you, an officiant if you wish, and Iceland. A ceremony on a black beach, at the foot of a waterfall or facing a glacier, then a day of exploring together, camera in hand. The purest form of what I love in this work.

Intimate weddings
Your closest people, a small ceremony in a setting none of them will ever forget, and a celebration in a lodge or a guesthouse as the light stretches on. Iceland rewards small weddings: the landscapes do the decorating, and every logistics gets simpler.

Post-wedding & anniversary sessions
Already married, or marrying at home first? Bring the dress to Iceland. A post-wedding session lets you wear it again in the wildest setting imaginable, without a timeline, without guests, with only the wind and the light to answer to.

Documenting love
in a land of elements
Iceland is the world capital of the elopement, and it earned the title honestly: nowhere else concentrates so many otherworldly landscapes in one drivable loop. Black sand beaches under the basalt cliffs, waterfalls you can walk behind, glacier lagoons where icebergs drift to the sea, mossy lava fields, volcanic highlands. And above it all, a light that never behaves: the midnight sun that stretches golden hour across half the night in June, the low amber sun of winter, and, if you are lucky, the northern lights.
My approach to documentary reportage was made for this. Iceland cannot be staged: the wind lifts the veil when it decides, the rain arrives and leaves within the hour, the light changes while you are still setting down your bag. So I don't fight it, I plan for it and then I document it. Your day is built around the weather windows and the light, with plans B and C ready for every location, and then it unfolds as it wants to. The images that come out of that, you laughing into the wind, the dress alive, the landscape immense around two small human figures who chose each other, are the most honest I know how to make.
Practically, an Iceland elopement is planned entirely by video call, at times that suit your time zone: locations, season, timeline, backup options, and the practical details that matter there more than anywhere, from crampons for the ice to a warm layer under the dress. I arrive ahead of your day to scout, and the travel, flights and accommodation, is calculated at its real cost and included transparently in your personalised quote before you commit. Afterwards, your gallery of individually retouched photographs arrives in a private online space, accessible for one year, ready to be shared with your loved ones back home.
The most beautiful settings
of Iceland
Five emblematic settings to anchor your elopement in the soul of Iceland.
The black sand beaches
The south coast beaches around Vík are the signature image of an Iceland elopement: jet black sand, basalt columns rising like organ pipes, sea stacks in the mist and the North Atlantic rolling in. A ceremony here, dressed in white against all that black, creates a contrast no other place on earth can offer. We time it around the tides and the crowds, early morning being pure magic.
The waterfalls
Iceland's waterfalls are characters in themselves: Skógafoss and its wall of spray where rainbows live, Seljalandsfoss that you can walk behind for portraits inside the curtain of water, and dozens of quieter falls known mostly to locals, perfect for vows without an audience. Bring a change of shoes, expect to get a little wet, and trust me that it is worth every drop.
The glacier lagoon
At Jökulsárlón, icebergs calve from the glacier and drift silently across the lagoon before washing up on the Diamond Beach, where blocks of crystal ice glitter on the black sand. For a couple session, it is the closest thing to another planet that a road can reach.
The Snæfellsnes peninsula
Called Iceland in miniature: the perfect cone of Kirkjufell, black churches, golden beaches, lava fields and cliffs full of birds, all within a day's loop from Reykjavik. Ideal for couples who want the full Icelandic range without the long drive east.
The light itself
In Iceland, the setting is also a season. June and July bring the midnight sun and golden hours that last until two in the morning. September to March opens the northern lights season, with short but spectacular days. Each has its magic, and we choose yours together according to the images you dream of.
Your questions about
an elopement in Iceland
These are the questions that come up most often with couples planning their elopement in Iceland.
- Have you really photographed in Iceland?Yes. I travelled to Iceland with Maëlle and Matthieu, a couple I accompanied there, and their words are just below on this page. It was one of the strongest experiences of my career as a photographer, and it taught me what Iceland asks of you on the ground: reading the weather, planning around the light, and letting the elements write their part of the story. I dream of going back with every couple who asks.
- Can foreigners get legally married in Iceland?Iceland is known for being one of the most welcoming countries in the world for non-resident couples who want a legal marriage, with paperwork prepared in advance with the Icelandic authorities. The requirements can evolve, so we verify the current conditions together while planning, and many couples also simply choose a symbolic ceremony for total freedom of place and words. Both make magnificent photographs.
- Do you speak English?Honestly: I understand English well and I'm learning to speak it better all the time, though I'm not fully fluent yet. To make sure nothing is ever lost, I use Ray-Ban Meta glasses with live translation for any moment that needs precise words. And with 300+ weddings behind me, I anticipate the day visually, so communication is never a barrier to great photographs.
- What happens if the weather turns on our day?In Iceland, the weather always turns, and that is part of the deal. We build your day with plans B and C for every location, we stay flexible on timing, and we embrace what comes: the mist on the cliffs, the dress in the wind, the sudden shaft of sun after the rain. Some of the most powerful elopement images ever made in Iceland were taken in what forecasters would call bad weather. The only real rule is warm layers and a sense of adventure.
- How does the travel cost work?Transparently, like everything else. Flights, accommodation and ground travel are calculated at their real cost and integrated into your personalised quote before you commit, so you know the exact final amount from the start. I arrive ahead of your day to scout the locations, which is included in the plan.
- How many photos will we receive, and when? For an elopement, the gallery is adapted to your coverage, with every image individually retouched, and delivery is faster than for a full wedding. For a complete wedding day, you can count on 600 to 800 images within 4 weeks on average. Everything arrives in a secure private online gallery, accessible for one year, in high definition, easy to share with your loved ones back home.
- When is the best season for an Iceland elopement? It depends on your dream. June and July offer the midnight sun, mild temperatures and golden hours that stretch until the small hours: the easiest and most luminous option. September and October add autumn colours and the first northern lights with manageable weather. Winter is for the bold: short days, ice caves, snow and the best aurora odds, in exchange for real cold and flexible plans.
- How does the first meeting work?I offer a first meeting that is free and without obligation, by video call, of about 20 minutes, at a time that works with your time zone. It is the moment to talk about your dream, your season, the images that matter to you, and to see whether my approach matches what you are looking for. I then come back to you quickly with a personalised proposal. Your date is confirmed on receipt of the 30% deposit and the contract signed online.
Their words,
my finest rewards
Stéphane wasn't just our photographer. Stéphane was first of all an encounter. A beautiful encounter with someone who genuinely cares about the couples he chooses to accompany, about our personalities and our emotions, and who is committed to translating them as faithfully as possible through his work. It's his personality, his eye, his professionalism and his attention that made this experience possible. We had a wonderful time at every step of this adventure, and the result is every bit as magnificent as our memories. Stéphane, THANK YOU.
We came from Switzerland and could not have dreamed of a better photographer. Stéphane made us feel at ease immediately, he was present all day without us ever noticing him, and the photos are beyond anything we hoped for. Every image brings back the emotion of the moment exactly as we lived it.
